A fiberoptic borescope coupled with a video camera and recorder is a valuable tool for documenting conditions within shell-and-tube heat exchangers, refrigeration machines (chillers) and piping systems. A borescopic inspection will establish the presence of waterside deposits and provide some clues as to the deposit composition and modes of corrosion. Borescopic inspections do not require the destruction of piping system components; however, the system does need to be at least partially drained to allow for access. Routine borescopic inspections are recommended for chillers with enhanced tubes.
